7 Things You Should Do to Improve Your Job Search

Although there’s not a magic formula for locating and securing your dream job, certain things you do could make it easier to achieve those seemingly elusive goals. Keep reading to learn several things that should make your career search smoother and more productive.

1. Submit Applications With Care

Some people are so desperate to find employment that they apply for almost any position that seems like a remotely good option. That’s an understandable tactic, but usually, the more positions for which you apply, the greater the chance that the overall quality level of your applications will go down.

Set a goal where you apply for a certain number of positions each day or each week, and stick to that limit. Furthermore, make sure to apply to each opportunity with the best of your ability, being careful to answer all questions fully and tailor your answers so they are relevant, yet genuine. Having good references is important, and you should also customize your cover letter so it reflects needs that are specifically mentioned in the advertisement for the job.

2. Identify the Decision Makers

Every company has one person or several people who have the power to say whether certain applicants should be hired or passed over. Find several places where you’d love to work and use any available resources to see if you can determine the people who hold those positions at the respective companies.

Once you’ve done that, go through your smartphone contacts and figure out if anyone you know might be able to arrange an introduction. Networking has a very good success rate, especially compared to other methods like merely searching through job boards.

3. Look at Your Résumé Like a Hiring Manager Does

You’ve probably heard that most human resources personnel look at your documents for less than a minute before deciding whether something stands out. Take a hard look at things and try to put yourself in their shoes. If you scan your résumé for a maximum of 20 seconds, what stands out to you? Is everything organized so as to best highlight your skills and experience? Are you using descriptive words that say a lot without being long-winded?

If not, or you aren’t sure, it’s time to polish things up. A friend can also give feedback about how to make edits that meet your objectives.

4. Review Your Social Media Profiles

In many ways, your social media presence is an extension of your personal brand. Many hiring managers check social media profiles to see if everything there matches up with what you’ve said about yourself in other formats.
That’s why it’s such a good idea to make sure your social media profiles are a good reflection of who you are. Consider making some changes so certain parts are only visible to people in your network and not to a hiring manager who hasn’t met you yet.

5. Follow Companies You Admire

Speaking of social media, it’s worthwhile to follow the profiles of companies that catch your interest. That’s even true if you don’t necessarily want to work at the company, but are curious about seeing what kinds of needs they fulfill in their respective industries. Remember that whenever you apply for a job, it’s important to assert yourself as a person who can solve a problem for an employer or get the establishment closer to reaching its goals.

6. Go to Industry Conferences

Industry conferences are great places to sharpen your networking skills, but that’s not the only reason to book a spot. Being there gives you the chance to learn and grow, plus it demonstrates to others in your field that you truly care about staying abreast of things. If you plan to attend a conference, keep plenty of business cards on hand.

7. Build a Website

Depending on your specialization, it may be impossible to showcase the breadth of your skills on a résumé alone. In that instance, a website can be very handy. Whether you have a large body of graphic design work or a background that’s too extensive to describe on paper, a website can hold a person’s interest and help you get an all-important interview.

Besides keeping all these points in mind, do your best to take an all-encompassing approach in your search for employment. However, make sure that everything you participate in as part of an effort to find work has a clear purpose.

It’s also helpful to have methods of measuring whether what you’re doing is worthwhile, or if it’s time to change your focus. By going about things in a dedicated and calculated manner, you could be well on your way to finding a fulfilling job in much less time than you’d imagined.
